British Airways shoes - The new BA uniform reinvents tradition
On 6 January 2023, British Airways presented a completely redesigned uniform for the first time in almost two decades. The collection was created by British-Ghanaian tailor Ozwald Boateng OBE, who spent four years observing the daily lives of mechanics, ground staff and crew so that the outfit would work as well as it looks. The result will dress more than 30,000 employees and marks a strategic shift in the company's "Great British Original" image.
The wardrobe combines tailoring rigour with innovation. For them, there are three-piece suits in regular or slim versions; for women, dress, skirt or trouser options, plus a jumpsuit - the big first for a British carrier. With the diversity of cultures in mind, a hijab tunic is also included. Technically, each piece features an "airwave" motif, inspired by the flow of air over the wing, and a discreet jacquard with BA's legendary speedmark.
The process was as inclusive as it was meticulous. More than 1,500 employees tested prototypes on cargo flights and on icy runways at -18 °C, requiring practical changes such as pockets for tools or touch-screen fabric on gloves. At the same time, the new Uniform Guidelines - published in November 2022 - value authenticity: afro haircuts, neutral make-up or the possibility of choosing between an analogue watch and a smartwatch are gaining ground, as long as the look remains professional.
Sustainability also came into the equation: over 90 per cent of the garments use recycled polyester and all the cotton comes from the Better Cotton initiative. When the new uniform reaches the entire network - a phased process between spring and summer 2023 - Julien MacDonald uniforms will be donated to institutions or recycled, underlining the "BA Better World" commitment.
In short, BA has transformed the uniform into a symbol of modernity, inclusion and environmental responsibility. But no haute couture look can remain impeccable at 35,000 feet without the right foundation: footwear.
